MFL Curriculum Intent (French and Spanish)

The MFL Curriculum is built upon our three principles of Excellence, Collaboration and Success.

Excellence in our subject means that we have high expectations for behaviour for learning and we provide a broad curriculum to all students, which allows them to progress on to GCSE MFL learning with confidence. They will also develop a curiosity about the culture of the countries in which the languages are spoken.

Collaboration in MFL means Spanish specialists working closely with French specialists at Key stages 2-4 in order to deliver the best curriculum possible. We also work closely with outside institutions and agencies to regularly provide enriching extra-curricular experiences that are based both within the U.K and abroad.

Success in MFL and its high academic performance is achieved through our ambitious and enriching curriculum.  Success is recognised regularly in class thanks to departmental rewards and regular contact home. MFL learners will become confident and independent linguists who are open minded and have a good knowledge of the culture of French/ Spanish speaking countries.

At all key stages in MFL we offer:

  • a rich, broad and balanced curriculum
  • an inclusive curriculum designed to engage, support and challenge every learner
  • a curriculum that values diversity and reflects the world our students live in

In MFL, all pupils at KS3 follow a curriculum that aligns broadly with the three themes at GCSE level (AQA syllabus).   Pupils have two one-hour lessons of MFL per week.  All groups in KS3 MFL are mixed ability and there is a great focus on phonics and activities such as dictation and reading aloud in class.  All pupils have weekly core vocabulary to learn for homework, in preparation for their weekly quiz in class.

The KS4 curriculum is taught over 2 years, beginning in Year 10.  We follow the AQA GCSE syllabus and pupils have four exams at the end of Year 11, with all four skills having equal weighting.  Pupils have three hours of MFL – one double period and one single period per week.  Teaching focuses on receptive skills, vocabulary and grammar and active skills. The three themes studied are People and Lifestyle, Popular Culture and Communication and the World Around Us.  KS4 students also learn weekly vocabulary for a quiz in class, alongside a grammatical weekly task.  Both KS3 and KS4 students have access to the exciting MFL Reading Challenge and regular trips, both abroad and in the U.K.
